Signs Of The End Times Here In South Carolina

I almost agree with one of our states most foolish politicians. It seems that Mike Fair is proposing a tax increase on adult oriented magazines. I have always considered the old fashioned sin tax a reasonable means of raising income. I myself would have aimed this money into the general fund, not into a specific program but this is one Mike Fair proposals that could be workable.

I wonder how he feels about another sin tax the state should be considering? I suspect that in this arena where he may be a touch more reluctant to embrace the whole sin tax concept.

  1. I know you're not expecting this comment from me, because Senator Fair and I have our differences. (see note under: "Origin of Species") But having worked with him closely on several early childhood issues, I have found that Senator Fair is not one of those "strangle government in the bathtub" whack-jobs; he's actually a well-read, thoughtful person whose word means something (qualities not shared by a majority of his colleagues).

His assistant (a partisan Democrat, by the way), told me something that really changed my whole opinion of him early on in my work at the State House. Senator Fair drives home every night to be with his family (even late nights. I wish I could say the same about me.

I don't have a good handle on where is he is on the cigarette tax, but I wouldn't be surprised if he risks a "yes" vote. I know I've been able to count on him on some other issues that don't fit neatly into his paleo-conservative persona.

As to the issue of taxing Playboy and Hustler to help treat sex offenders, well, I don't know. Won't this unfairly raise the cost of self-abuse for the poor? What if they just start passing their dog-eared porno around like we used to do in middle school? Won't that result in a wholesale collapse of the vital porn sector of our economy? What will happen to all the Photoshop artists with their airbrush tools?

The next thing you know, they will want to tax dog fights.

Sen. Fair is a genuine man with genuine principles. he is to be commended for standing firm for his efforts in trying to help our quality of life with this filth tax.

  3. I never viewed Mike as being a norquist type guy, more of the Christian Reconstructionism / Dominist bent.

I find those far more dangerous.

It doens't mean he is a bad person. It just means he doens't understand or care abot the principals that our nation was build upon.

I have to agree with John. Senator Fair may be a great father, friend, etc., but his social agenda approach to legislating demonstrates a clear pattern of sex-obsession and homophobia.
