The Good Old Days

Another fine southern gentleman has made the choice to display to the world just how open minded and progressive he is.

A state legislator's statement that black people "should get over" slavery and questioning whether Jews should apologize "for killing Christ" caused furious and tearful denunciations Tuesday before stunned lawmakers.

{snip}

In the interview, Hargrove, R-Hanover, said slavery ended nearly 140 years ago with the Civil War and added, "I personally think that our black citizens should get over it."

The newspaper also quoted him as wondering aloud, "are we going to force the Jews to apologize for killing Christ?"

Welcome to the south, where old ideas are lauded, and change is a multigenerational process.

Indeed. Frankly, I think Abraham Lincoln made a grave mistake going to war to bring the South back into the Union. I wonder, is it too late to grant freedom to the Old Confederacy to go on their merry independent way again?

Of course, then I would have been trapped in the South in a country run by incurious religious zealots and beady-eyed racist bigots, rather than being able to move to a civilized area of the country where such boorishness is frowned upon, but one must sacrifice, I suppose...

I don't condsider myself a person with a prejudice, but, but white southern men thinking that they know what's best for blacks, women and the rest of the world really makes not like them as a whole very much.
I cringe when one speaks especially with the initials of GWB

I think that the south would be a perfect place to send all of the "Christians" who believe in the Rapture. Give them a nuclear bomb to detonate when the last of them has arrived. It would be a win win situation...they get raptured, and we would be rid of them....
