Mississippi, Evolution and Stupidity.

A fairly large number of member of the online progressive community have taken note of some polling information comming out of Mississipi and Alabama. One data point has gotten frequent mention, a majority of the republicans in these states don't believe in evolution.

I have a problem with this: Not the data that has been reported in the poll, but how it is being phrased. I do think that a majority of the Republicans in these states (like my home state of South Carolina) no not accept evolution, but this is not a matter of belief, think it is a matter of not understanding.

Evolution is science, you do not believe in science. You can understand the science, you can accept the science (because you understand how science works, but don't want to spend the time learning the details of this branch of science) or you can deny the science, belief plays no roll here.

The truth is the people in these areas are either too dumb or too lazy to do the hard work of understanding this theory so they take the easy route and deny science because they 'believe' in their religion ( where belief is essential... it is a major aspect of faith - accepting what cannot be proven as real). As was pointed out in the news reports about this polling:

Mississippi and Alabama are also deeply religious states that generally rank at or close to the bottom in most state education rankings.
Southern Republicans are, on the whol,e willfully dumb. The refuse to learn or to expose themselves to anything that upsets their world view. Time and again we find the greatest level of reactionary behavior, the greatest resistance to change, the locale where old times are not forgotten (but remembered in a very flawed and disny-esq manner) to be the deep south. This happens because of the population doesn't know better and simply refuses to do the work needed to learn the truth.

As a result we see that the majority of folks who will be voting today think the Obama is a follower of Islam (nope, he is a Christian, just like these folks are) that Evolution is wrong (or somehow in scientific dispute) and that the climate is not changing because of the actions on an industrial society. Heck, this crowd of rubes think Linbaugh is an admirable human being.

Need we say anything more about the flawed nature of the Southern Republican?
