Can Bush Award Himself a Medal Of Freedom?

President Bush is not satisfied in the results of the response to the mess in the Gulf. Please note, it is not the response that upsets him, just the results. So dissatisfied the he will Investigate the matter himself. Of course, while noting the need to investigate this, he is also laying the ground work to blame others for the failure of results.

Bush said: "It's very important for us to understand the relationship between the federal government, the state government and the local government when it comes to a major catastrophe. . . . We want to make sure that we can respond properly if there's a WMD [weapons of mass destruction] attack or another major storm."

I have a few question I hope he would address, but the most pressing ones this morning include:

Why did FEMA wait until hours after the storm hit to request the dispatch of Homeland Security Staff into the Gulf, and why he gave them 2 days to get into place?

Why were 1000 firefighters, many trained on search and rescue, used to hand out flyers, and pose in a photo opp with you, instead of working to save those in need

Do you approve of you senior officials telling bold face lies to cover up his ineptness?

In the end, after a complete examination of all the important facts, I expect that the President will determine that the efforts were in-fact heroic and superhuman. This will compel him to award the head of homeland security, the head of FEMA and in a unprecedented move, himself medals of freedom.

I and many others are sick and tired of this blame game for political and racial reasons. You are creating division at a time when unity is needed. Go ahead and play your game. We will continue to help those affected by the storm.
If you are interested in blaming someone, look no farther than the Mayor of New Orleans. He has been the most vocal critic, accusing the Federal Government of not rescuing his people on time. But what did he do to get HIS residents out of the city before the storm hit, especially those who were unable to get out?(Elderly, sick, poor, etc.) The schools were closed days in advance of the storm. Instead of just telling people to flee the city, why didn't he and the city council have an evacuation plan for those who couldn't make it out for whatever reason? They could have had people meet at various locations around the city and get on school buses driven either by the bus drivers or a group of pre-arranged volunteers, and driven those who were unable to leave for financial and other reasons, out of the city. They could have had arrangements with other states or facilities to house their people. If New Orleans had done it's job, them the Federal Government would have had less people to rescue(mainly those who waited out the storm because they have had so many of these warnings before and had nothing serious happen) The residents of the city of New Orleans are the responsibility of the City Government of New Orleans. You would think that by now they would have an evacuation plan for it's citizens who could not physically or financially leave the city. There are hundreds if not thousands of school buses available and they had ample warning of the storms approach. They are the ones who left their citizens to fend for themselves, not the Federal Government. Get off your high horse and help these people! Stop playing your silly little games.

I love comments like these. They are so absurd.

Unfortunatly, except for those who have specific training and ties to services operating in the area we are limited to giving what money we can, and then sitting and waiting.

Are you advocating actions like tose of the Duke Universiy students who forged IDs to get into the ciry to evacuate a few people?

As to your other points, The Mayor did order, for the first time ever in the city a manditory evacuation. He did establish a sheltor of last resort for those unable to leave.

No city and few states have the resources in money, eupiment or experts to undertake some of the plans you mention.

They load up the 100,000 people, mostly old sick and poor, and move them.

where?

shelters for hundreds of miles were already full of those who had their own transportation.

Missions of this scale or the responsability of the federial government, by their own pronouncement.

The emergence was declaired on Saturday, but the people to operate all these services were not told to be on site till Wendesday.

How can any city, without the support of the Feds expect to respond, and being there on Wenesday is clearly not a prompt resonse.

Passing the buck, while not unexpected is disgusting.
