a transfer ceremony that was to be attended by top generals was canceled three days beforehand, after Iraq's Defense Ministry said it would not approve the officer groomed by U.S. forces since August to command the unit, Col. Muhammed Wasif Taha, a 23-year Iraqi army veteran.
The Shiite leaders of the government don't want to have a Sunni heading up the defense of the capital region. I am sure there are a number of reasons that the US favored this man, and a number of excuses the government will cite in justifying their position, but in the end it is just another sign that an open civil war may be very near.
