Let Them Eat Cake

In the last three years we have had a reduction in real wages, all except the very richest of Americans are loosing purchasing power. We have had record numbers of people slip into poverty, and record numbers who no longer have health insurance.

The republicans have enacted a economic program that is best titled no millionaire left behind. However, their desire to ensure the success of the very wealthy, has been done at the expense of the workers and the poor of this nation.

Hurricane Katrine has exposed the depraved level of indifference that the Republican party has for the working class. While demanding that tax cuts be approved; Tax cuts that will cost us hundred of billions, and benefit only the very rich, and they want to pay for these tax cuts, and the hurricane relief by making the poor pay.

House Republican leaders raised the stakes this week in a looming budgetary showdown, pledging to lift the target of entitlement cuts from $35 billion to $50 billion, impose across-the-board spending cuts and rescind spending already approved -- all to offset the cost of hurricane relief.

The move, announced at a closed-door meeting of House Republicans Thursday night, would cut tens of billions of dollars from entitlement programs for the poor, such as Medicaid

A couple of hundred years ago a leader of another country was told that the people had her land had not bread to eat.

Her heartless and grossly uninformed reply was let them eat cake.

In the end she was removed from power, and had her life ended. In modern times a person doesn't lose their head for being heartless and uninformed, but we can still hope that people with this little concern for the people they are suppose to lead can still be removed from power.

You are missing the biggest lie of them all. "There have been no tax cuts".

Instead, there have been only "tax shifts" and "tax increases". What Bush calls tax cuts is really a huge increase in the "children's tax". It is what our children will have to pay once they become adults.

A true tax cut is where everyone pays less tax. A tax shift is where some people pay less and others pay more. With Bush's tax scheme, the wealthy pay a lot less and our children will have to pay a lot more.

For every dollar the government spends, a dollar has to be collected from a tax of some type. If the dollar is not immediately collected, it has to be borrowed and interest paid on it until the time that the original dollar is eventually paid off. This means that taxes are ultimately equal to spending and not equal to collections (collections in excess of spending is called a savings).

Since taxes are really equal to spending, Bush's increased government spending means that he increased taxes instead of cutting them. He has then dumped this increase in tax obligations onto our children.

Few people understand the significance of words like "national debt" since it has no emotional impact. However, most people will understand the concept of an unfair tax. That is why we must stop talking about the budget deficit and instead refer to it as the Children's tax. It is what our children have to pay because we are not.

Unfortunately, until "tax shift" and "children's tax" become common terms, polliticians of both parties will continue to be able to get elected by stuffing IOU's into our children's piggy banks.

I recently heard that Bush increased spending (taxes)more than any president in history. Yet, everyone continues to believe the lie that he cut taxes.

Please help spread the word.
