WASHINGTON -- House and Senate negotiators have struck a tentative deal on the expiring Patriot Act that would curb the FBI's investigative power and require the Justice Department to more fully report its secret requests for information about ordinary people.
Of course there is a major drawback to this plan, the rest of the act may be made permanent. These little steps, while good to see, are not yet sufficient to assure proper protection of our civil liberties. The end result of this is an issue that will remain with us for a while, and now each provision will have to be attacked one at a time.
but, with time, they will be changed to be more inline with American ideals.
