About 2,500 U.S. marines and 1,000 local Iraqi soldiers met sporadic resistance on Saturday as they moved through Qusayba on the Syrian border, the U.S. military said in a statement.
U.S. officials described the town, which lies about 320 kilometres northwest of Baghdad, as the key to controlling the volatile Euphrates River valley.
The U.S. military said in a statement that "Operation Steel Curtain" was aimed at dislodging al-Qaeda in Iraq, led by Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
It sounds just like the last 4 operations in the Euphrates River Valley.
The trouble is, once we clear these towns, the insurgents just come back in. Maybe this time the security force we leave behind can stand up and do their job, or we will be back in 4 months.
