The Voting Rights Act Survives

Despite the efforts of a number of southern Republicans to kill or weaken it to the point of worthlessness.

If this had not been an election year, and the Republicans were not is so much trouble in so many districts, I suspect that this law may have died.

I am actually conflicted about the continued usefulness of the Voting Rights Act. For the good that it has done, it has also resulted in the legally-sanctioned gerrymandering of districts and increased polarization. All in all, I'd have to say it's currently doing at least as much harm as good.

I would agree, but, if you let the VRA end, it will not stop the gerrymandering, and would in some states end up in loss of voting access for some minorities.

Gosh 3 No Votes doesnt even sound close. Sounds like everyone was on the same page to me.
I agree with notverybright on some of the points. I also think any bill that supports Voting places to have Ballots in any other language than English kind of defeats the purpose as well. I agree the United States of America is a melting pot of nations, but all of the early Americans who migrated, learned English as a common Language of Americans. When does the Pandering stop? I bet those Democrats would love to see those Ballots in Spanish wouldnt they. Especially since George W. has all those Migrant Workers fired up over his Waffling around. Border Control... wait no Border Control, yeah Border Control. Make up your mind George, and dont do it half assed.

Might i offer a reason that the knee-jerk renewal of these provisions is not the great thing most are portraying it to be?
